Telesat Leverages RealVNC's VNC Enterprise Edition

Telesat,  a provider of satellite communication products, tracking systems, towers and Internet routers, announced that it is utilizing the latest RealVNC software, VNC Enterprise Edition, to remotely access, control and troubleshoot mission critical ground systems around the globe.

According to a press release, VNC Enterprise Edition will enable Telesat to provide reliable round-the-clock communications solutions to its broadcast, telecom, corporate and government customers.

Telesat has a global fleet of 12 satellites, with three more under construction. It also manages the operations of 13 additional satellites for third parties.

According to the release, Telesat will utilize VNC Enterprise Edition throughout its Satellite Control Networks. The company will use the software for remote access to a wide range of Windows, Linux and UNIX based systems. The software will also facilitate in fixing the problems instantly, thereby helping in reducing time and cost of engineers travelling to remote facilities.

Engineers and flight dynamic experts will be utilizing RealVNC’s (News - Alert) VNC Enterprise Edition software to monitor the status of Telesat satellites and to manage remote base stations. In addition, VNC will also facilitate Telesat’s antenna specialists to control the radio dish drive systems that track the satellites in orbit.

Furthermore, RealVNC is also being utilized by Telesat to provide Transfer Orbit Services (TOS) support to Telesat customers launching new satellites. During the critical 5 20 day period, the TOS network will track the satellite from multiple remote sites around the globe from its launch to the time it is parked in orbit.

This period will require round-the-clock support. VNC will provide key Telesat engineers with secure remote access to support this process, thereby enabling them to troubleshoot any of the tracking stations wherever they are when the minutes of having to drive into work could be enough to lose a satellite in orbit.

According to Andy Harter, CEO at RealVNC, Telesat demonstrates the power and versatility of VNC Enterprise Edition, from remotely managing mission critical satellite control systems to providing remote systems administration and allowing people to work from home.

“VNC has become integral to our business and we simply couldn’t get our work done at the pace required by todays operating environment without the remote capabilities it provides,” said Wayne Hobbs, network analyst, satellite control networks at Telesat. “In addition to giving us remote access to vital telemetry and control systems over secure VPNs, VNC has a host of other applications from system and network administration and backup; training, development and simulation work; to accessing emails and documents from home, or anywhere else in the world.”
